Chapter 15
The sun beats down on the Jeep as Maggie drives to Herr Beckerâs house. She beats herself up as she grips the steering wheel as hard as she can. If sheâd only know about Herr Beckerâs propensity for body building and slight anger issues, she would have had her team at his house the day before.
And maybe Jeffrey Daniels would still be alive.
Chief Parks grips the panic handle at the top of the window as he points out what turns to take. The more Maggie drives around town, the more familiar she feels with the roads. Itâs like sheâs tapping into the memorized maps that sheâd forgotten about.
âHe lives in an apartment?â Maggie turns into the complex. The three-story tall buildings rise around them like giants. Each has a balcony off one side and half of those are filled with flapping laundry.
âHigh school teachers donât make a lot of money,â Parks tells her. âHeâs in the last unit on the right, second floor.â
Good. Maggie knows that having a perp on the second floor is better than on the first because they wonât be able to run as easily. She parks the car off to the side of the building and checks her Glock.
âYou know, my old chief in Chicago never joined us on the road.â Her words stop Parks in his tracks as he prepares to get out of the car.
He turns to her. Even though heâs aged a lot, he still looks thrilled about what the two of them are doing. Thereâs a spark in his eyes that she hadnât seen when she came in to interview last week.
âMy badge isnât broken,â he says. âThereâs no reason for me to sit in my office when you need help.â When he speaks he shrugs a little bit and runs his finger over his badge. Itâs shiny and bright, attached right above his heart, and Maggieâs surprised at the way he touches it.
Maggie eyeballs him. If sheâs honest with herself, sheâs happier having the older chief along with her than the younger Trevor. Heâs just feeling squirrely from being locked up in his office. Everything was going to be fine.
âSounds good then. Iâll take the lead, you be the muscle.â Maggie locks the doors as she hops out and the chief follows. Moving quickly and quietly, they make their way to the staircase. Maggie touches the handrail and pulls it to see how much itâs going to rattle.
Even though she doesnât know for sure if this man is the killer, she doesnât want to alert him to their presence. Itâs better for the two of them to sneak up without him knowing that theyâre coming.
It seems impossible to her that a high school teacher is the one killing people in the middle of parking lots, but someoneâs the killer. Sheâs worked enough cases in Chicago to know that you canât always judge a killer just by looking at them.
One case in particular has always bothered her. She put a young woman in jail for killing her husband.
